Driving Rules in Australia In Australia cars travel on the left of the road, overtake on the right hand side, and speed is in km/h not m/h. Each Australian state has slightly different road rules but road rules are largely consistent. Speed limits
Giveway Rules GIVE WAY RULES WHERE THERE ARE NO SIGNS Some crossroads have no traffic lights or signs. Generally if you’re turning across another vehicle’s path, you must give way. When turning at an intersection, you must give way to: 1. Oncoming vehicles going straight ahead 2. Oncoming vehicles turning left 3. Any vehicle on your right When you are turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling on your left and any pedestrians crossing the road. If you and an oncoming vehicle are turning right at an intersection both cars should pass in front of each other. If other drivers do not give way to you, do not force them or yourself into a dangerous situation. Pedestrians have right of way at all intersections. You must also give way to any pedestrians at or near the intersection on the road you are entering. Keep intersections clear at all times. Seat Belts Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint appropriate for their age. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers under 16 years are wearing their seat belts when riding in a vehicle fitted with seat belts. |
