Top: Australia > New South Wales > Sydney > Architecture / Historic Building / Monument Rose Seidler House Rose Seidler House was built between 1948 and 1950 and was the first commission for one of Sydney's most famous - and most controversial - architects, Harry Seidler. It is now being run by the Historic Houses Trust and is open to the public. Susannah Place Susannah Place is a terrace of 4 houses, encompassing a corner store, built in the Rocks area in 1844. Susannah Place has been restored to its original condition and furnished with period pieces - down to the original brick privies and open laundries. Vaucluse House Historic Vaucluse House gives us a glimpse into the lives of the well-to-do Sydneysider in the 19th century. Vaucluse House is an elegant Gothic mansion made of sandstone and is accurately furnished for the period. Hyde Park Barracks Museum The elegant Hyde Park Barracks, an excellent example of Georgian architecture, designed in 1819 by convict architect, Francis Greenaway. Built as a dormitory and place of work and punishment for male convicts, now it houses a museum. Experiment Farm Cottage Experiment Farm Cottage stands on the colony's first land grant. The cottage has been restored and furnished to reflect the period. Hambledon Cottage This sandstone cottage was built in 1824 for Penelope Lucas, governess to the daughters of John and Elizabeth Macarthur, and is a couple of blocks away from the Macarthur's Elizabeth Farm. The cottage has been restored to the period 1820-50. Nutcote Historic House Nutcote was the home of May Gibbs, author and illustrator. Nutcote has been restored and refurbished in the style of the 1930s. The Sydney Opera House The Sydney Opera House is the busiest performing arts center in the world. The Sydney Opera House is really a complex of theatres and halls that present theatre, musicals, opera, contemporary dance, ballet and music. Sydney Opera House With its white, sculptural 'shells' rising from the harbor foreshore at Bennelong Point, the Opera House is Sydney's most recognisable building and, officially, one of the 7 wonders of the 20th century. St Mary's Cathedral St Mary's Cathedral, begun in 1821, was not completed until 1928. It is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture. A feature of the Cathedral is the Crypt, and the Celtic-inspired terrazzo mosaic floor. Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Museum and Lookout Inside the south-east pylon ot the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a museum with displays showing the construction of the bridge. There is a viewing platform with magnificent views of the harbour. Fort Denison Located in the middle of Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison, originally known as Rock Island was an isolated prison for the most dangerous convicts. Known as "Pinchgut" due to the meagre rations given to convicts, the island has a grim history. St James's Anglican Church St James's Church is a typical Georgian building and is built out of convict-made bricks. Originally designed as a courthouse in 1819, St James's is Sydney's oldest church.
