About All Australia

Australia is the world's smallest continent that stretches from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific. Australia is the driest inhabited continent, the flattest, and has the oldest and least fertile soils.

Australia is a Commonwealth made up of six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia) and two major mainland territories (the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory). Each Australian state and territory has its own legislature and Canberra is the capital city and the seat of the Commonwealth Government.

Most of inland Australia is desert or semi-arid with only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent having a temperate climate. The northern part of Australia has a tropical climate with rainforest, especially along the coastal fringe.

The indigenous people, the Aborigines, have lived in Australia for at least 42,000 years. Australian Aborigines were hunter-gatherers with a complex oral culture and spiritual values based on reverence for the land and a belief in the Dreamtime. Today, Australia is made up of many nationalities, mainly from Europe and more recently from Asia. Most of Australia's 20.6 million people live in the large maritime cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

The eucalyptus is the iconic tree symbol of Australia along with the koala, kangaroo, and wombat as well as the platypus and birds such as the emu and kookaburra. Other iconic Australian symbols include outdoor living with sun, sand and surf and barbecues. Over 80% of all Australian agricultural production is exported including meat, cereals, dairy products, wine, wool and rapeseed. Australia is the world’s largest refiner of bauxite, and the largest producer of gem and industrial diamonds, lead and tantalum, and the mineral sands ilmenite, rutile and zircon.

Sport plays an important part in Australian culture, especially cricket, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, cycling, rowing and swimming. Nationally, other popular sports include Australian rules football, horse racing, soccer and motor racing.
