Home from Home Review
Melbourne, Australia

4 / 5 Star Rating
Apartment Rental Melbourne We visited Melbourne at the end of May 2007 to attended a wedding. The ceremony was held in suburban Caufield and the reception in Toorak. We needed a two-bedroom apartment close to both venues, with kitchen facilities, off-street parking, affordable tariff, and proximity to shops and public transport. Home from Home in St Kida manage a number of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in St Kilda, Elsternwick & Caulfield that satisfy these requirements. Booking requests and confirmation of availability are made via Email from their Website. They were prompt in answering our booking request (s) but confirmation of the booking, and a deposit of $500, had to be done by unsecured Email or by phone. Having to phone from New Zealand and giving one's credit card details over the phone to an unknown person does not engender warm feelings of trust. In due course we were Emailed a receipt and an address where to collect the apartment keys - a suburban address in St Kilda. The Home from Home staff at St Kilda were very helpful and allowed us to book in early, but it would have been easier if they could have provided a street map of how to get from St Kilda to the apartment. In Australia, 21/2 Gordon Street is 2 Gordon Street and apartment 21, not the other way round. The first floor apartment in Gordon Street Elsternwick was near-new, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, smart modern furnishings, very clean, and with a good supply of towels, crisp new linen, comfortable beds, a good range of kitchen utensils, a washing machine and dryer, iron and ironing board and hair dryer. Heating cooling was by a heat pump, parking was provided in the basement and there was a balcony that overlooked the street. The apartment was only 5 minutes from the train station, trams and a good selection of shops. We would stay with Home from Home again, even though the front-end arrangements were messy. Costs were $160 per night plus a $48 cleaning fee, a total of AUD $1008 for 6 nights which is affordable accommodation for 4 adults. I would have given a 4 star rating if had not been for the difficult booking process and lack of navigation maps on how to reach the apartment.

Avis Customer Review
Melbourne Australia

3 / 5 Star Rating
We required a rental car in Melbourne for 6 days in May 2007. We chose a 4-door Holden from Avis with sufficient size for 4 adults and luggage. We had rented from a suburban Avis Agency previously, with good service. The staff at Melbourne Airport were courteous and helpful but unless one was aware of Melbourne's City Link tollway system, their explanation of how to pay for a ticket was cursory. The car was clean, comfortable, large enough and surprisingly fuel-efficient. However, the big downer was the book of Melbourne street maps supplied with the car had missing pages. The missing pages related to the suburban addresses that we had to visit and trying to navigate blind in a strange city is not to be recommended. When returning the car, we were told that we were the third customer that day complaining about missing map pages. Not good enough, Avis. Would use Avis again subject to verifying the map book was complete.

Avis Customer Review
Melbourne Australia

We booked an Avis car from a suburban Avis depot in Melbourne using the Avis Web site. The attendandant at Avis in Clayton / Mulgrave was couteous, helpful and performed a very thorough pre-use check of the car, noting all scratched and wear marks. The Toyota Corolla 1.8 litre 5 door car was clean, fuelled and we were given touring maps and comprehensive map books for Melbourne and Adelaide (most useful). The car performed well over the 10 days, Car return at Adelaide Airport was simple and stress free. Our only complaint was beginning with an estimated total cost of AUD $785.98 and being billed for AUD $812.58. It is not possible to determine from the receipt provided where the difference arose, and with a plane to catch, who has time to argue.
