About Edmonton Canada Edmonton is a vibrant prairie city located near the geographic centre of Alberta in western Canada, and is the provincial capital. Edmonton has a northern continental climate with mild summers and cold winters with extreme seasonal temperatures. Spring and autumn are both short and highly variable in Edmonton and winter lasts from November to March and varies greatly in length and severity. The municipality of Edmonton is the fifth largest in Canada with a population of over 700,00 people and the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area is the sixth largest in the country with a population of over 1,000,000. Edmonton is the most northerly major city in North America with a metro population of over 1 million people. The North Saskatchewan River bisects Edmonton and the surrounding area has some of the most fertile farmland on the prairies. Because Edmonton is built along a river valley, the city offers large tracts of urban parkland and several golf courses, both public and private. Downtown Edmonton has undergone a continual process of renewal and unprecedented growth since the mid-1990s to make way for office towers. Edmonton is a staging point for large-scale oil sands projects occurring in the north of the province as well as large-scale diamond mining operations in the Northwest Territories. While traditionally focused on the oil industry, earning the name Oil Capital of Canada, the economy is now the second most diverse in Canada with a strong technology sector. Edmonton has become one of Canada's major educational centres with several institutions and campuses. Edmonton is home to the largest shopping and entertainment complex in North America - the West Edmonton Mall. The West Edmonton Mall has a giant water park, a man-made lake, a skating rink, two mini-golf courses, 21 movie theatres, a Vegas-style casino and an amusement park with 25 rides and attractions. Edmonton is known as Canada's Festival City and the city hosts over 30 festivals annually that celebrate music, food, culture, sports, theatre and more. Edmonton has always been a city proud of its cultural accomplishments and the city boasts over 70 museums of ranging sizes. The Edmonton Oilers, originally one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association, are one of the best teams in the league. Commonwealth Stadium is home to the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. |
