Driving Rules in Canada

Cars drive on the right in Canada and overtake on the left. Speed limits and distances are posted in metric (kilometres and kilometres per hour).

Speed limits
Speed limits are generally lower in Ontario and Quebec on comparable roads than in other Canadian provinces, except perhaps British Columbia.

Typical speed limits are:
  • 30–50 km/h (20–30 mph) within school and playground zones
  • 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph) on residential streets within cities and towns
  • 60–70 km/h (35–45 mph) on major arterial roads in urban and suburban areas
  • 80–90 km/h (50–55 mph) on highways outside of cities and towns and urban expressways
  • 90–110 km/h (55–70 mph) on freeways and rural expressways
All drivers must slow down to 60 km/h when passing emergency vehicles stopped on the roadside that have their lights flashing. This includes city police and RCMP vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances.

Seat Belts
Seat Belt use is mandatory for all drivers and passengers in Canada.

Drivers Licence
Tourists from any other country are permitted to use their valid licence for a period of 3 months. Motorcyclists are required to wear helmets and drive with headlights on.
