The city of Winnipeg is located near the geographic centre of North America and has the coldest winters of any city of over 500,000 population in the Western Hemisphere. Winnipeg has an extreme continental climate with great differences between summer and winter temperatures because it is exposed to numerous weather systems including bitterly cold Arctic high pressure systems. Winnipeg lies at the bottom of the valley of the Red River and has an extremely flat topography with poor drainage and, because of a high winter snowfall, severe flooding in spring. Summers in Winnipeg are typically warm and often humid, particularly in June and July, with frequent (and sometimes severe) thundershowers. The largest employers in Winnipeg are either the Canadian government or government-funded institutions. The Royal Canadian Mint located in eastern Winnipeg produces all of the circulating coinage in Canada as well as producing coins for many other countries in the world. Winnipeg offers an abundance of recreational opportunities as it is close to hundreds of lakes including Lake Winnipeg, the eleventh largest lake in the world.
