Much like an onion there are layers and layers of London and no shortage of things to see and do. London is well known for being an expensive city and it often ranked by affordability surveys as the second most expensive city in the World behind Moscow. If you are going to be London for an entire week it is cheaper to get yourself a weekly travel card for Zones 1 and 2 that will give you access to the tube and buses. Before you leave home get yourself a passport sized photograph that will be required when purchasing a London weekly Travelcard. Most of your travel will be in Zones 1 and 2. If you need to travel to Zones 3 & 4 or 5 & 6 you can easily get an extensive on a Travelcard. If you are visiting for only a day or two you can buy daily travel cards. You can save on transport by purchasing an off-peak daily Travelcard that is only valid for travel after 9.30 and avoid the rush hour. If you are traveling by Rail to another UK town or city by train you can save money by traveling off peak during the day or weekends that are much cheaper. In central London it is often tempting to jump on a tube and quickly reach your destination a stop or two down the line. However if you have the time you are better off walking the streets because you will see more and get a better feel of how the central city is connected rather than viewing it from the perspective of a distorted tube map. Purchase a small pocket sized London A-Z map that is very helpful for navigating the London labyrinth. Water is drinkable out of the tap but most find the water distasteful and resort to bottled water. Be aware of pickpockets and bad snatchers that operate in city streets and the public transport system such as the tube. If you are carrying a bag make sure it is zipped up and if it is a backpack you may want to wear it on your front. Your best defense is to be alert and not look like an easy target. Don't carry more than enough money for day in your wallet. The usual custom is to tip taxis and restaurant staff 10%. Always check the bill and ask if the tip has been already included in the bill to avoid tipping twice. You will quickly discover that London is a city that is operated by queuing and the English will very quickly form orderly queues. It is offensive to Londoners to jump the queue and you do so at your own risk. In winter expect it to get dark at 4 pm. During summer you can make the most of longer days that get dark at 9 pm. Highly recommended day trips include a visit to St Pauls Cathedral. Be sure to climb to the top for a stunning view of London. |
