Cork is the second largest city of the Republic of Ireland and Ireland's third most populous city after Dublin and Belfast, respectively. The population of Cork is about 140,000 people but there are over 274,000 people in the Metropolitan Cork area. County Cork is situated in the South West of Ireland and is the largest of all the Irish counties and in many ways the most varied. The River Lee flows through the city of Cork and the main part of the city centre is built on an island in the river just before it flows into Lough Mahon and thence to Cork Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee, which embrace the city centre, are spanned by no less than sixteen bridges and this gives Cork a distinctive Continental air. Cork Harbour is one of the world's largest natural harbours and the city is a major Irish seaport with quays and docks sited along the fiver Lee on the city's east side. The pharmaceutical industry is a major employer in Cork City with the most famous product being Viagra. Cork is also the European headquarters of Apple Computer where their desktop computers are manufactured and their European call centre is hosted. Cork is known as a laid-back, relaxed place, where you can enjoy great music, theatre and visual arts. The covered English Market off Grand Parade in Cork is a popular market that sells just about everything form tatty old paperbacks to the trendiest foods. St Finbarr's Cathedral across South Gate Bridge in Cork has a wonderfully extravagant Victorian Gothic Revival interior full of colour and dash. Visitors climb the hill above Cork to St Anne's Church to send a peal from the famous Bells of Shandon out across the city. The Cork Film Festival is one of Ireland's premier cultural events and a major showcase for Irish film production. Popular events include the Cork Jazz Festival and the annual film and folk festivals. For a great view, visitors should climb Shandon Tower - and have a go at ringing the bells. The Heineken Brewery in Cork is famous for brewing Murphy's Irish Stout. Cork boasts many excellent restaurants, live music venues, and nightclubs. Cork was the last port visited by the Titanic before its fateful journey in 1912. The jagged Cork coastline is famed for its magnificent scenery, especially in the southwest. |
