Driving Rules in Ireland

Driving in any region of Ireland is on the left and seat belts must be worn at all times in the front and the back of the vehicle.

Speed Limits
  • Roads inside towns, 50 km/h (30 mph)
  • Local roads outside of towns, 80 kph (50 mph)
  • Roads with two or more lanes (dual carriageway), 100 kph (65 mph)
  • Expressway and motorway 120 kph (75 mph)
However, 100 km/h is the default limit on all National Routes regardless of design standard.

Signage
In the Republic, all signposts denoting distance and speed limits are now in kilometres per hour. ROI signposts and place names are displayed bilingually in both Irish (Gaelic) and English.

In Northern Ireland, all signposts and speeds are in miles and place names are displayed in English.
