About All New Zealand New Zealand comprises two large islands (the North Island and South Island) in the south-western Pacific and many smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands. The total land area of New Zealand is 268,680 square kilometres, a little less than that of Italy and Japan and a little more than the United Kingdom. New Zealand with just over 4 million people is notable for its geographic isolation by the Tasman Sea, being some 2,000 km from Australia to the north west. Auckland in the upper North Island of New Zealand is the largest city with more than one million people, but Wellington at the bottom of the North Island is the capital City. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. The climate throughout New Zealand is cool temperate to warm temperate with average temperatures rarely falling below 0°C or rising above 30°C. New Zealand is heavily dependent on export trade, with agriculture, horticulture, fishing and forestry making up about half of the country's exports. The pristine New Zealand countryside offers a rare beauty that includes glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, alpine lakes, hissing geysers and boiling mud to coastal plains and gentle pastoral landscapes with sheep, cattle and dairy cows. Much of New Zealand is covered by native and plantation forests and there is over 15,000 kilometres of beautiful and varied coastline. Tourism is an important, and growing, sector with visitors coming to New Zealand from all parts of the world. New Zealand has also become famous as "Middle Earth" following the epic production of the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films using visually stunning locations around both South and North Islands. |
