About Gisborne New Zealand
Gisborne, on the East Coast of the North Island, has a population of over 30,000 with a further 15,000 people residing in the Gisborne District. Gisborne is famous as the first city in the world to greet the new day. Gisborne is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand with a yearly sunshine average exceeding 2200 hours. Gisborne enjoys a wonderful mix of un-spoilt coastline and provincial charm.
The Gisborne District comprises the Poverty Bay Flats with 20,000 hectares of rich alluvial soils, and the surrounding Hill Country. The flat land is ideal for grapes, maize, kiwifruit, citrus and other subtropical fruits. The hill country beyond Gisborne City is famous for sheep, beef and deer farming. Forestry and wood processing industries are expanding throughout the District.
Gisborne offers visitors a whole range of activities from deep sea fishing, beach surfcasting, freshwater trout fishing, and great beaches for surfing and wind surfing. Other attractions include walks and tramping, visiting the Eastwood Hills Arboretum, local museums, vineyard visits and wine tastings, and just relaxing in the sun.
