About Hastings New Zealand

Hastings, population 68,100, is the main commercial centre for Hawkes Bay although Napier, on the coast and 20 km to the north, is almost the same size. Hastings is about 20 minutes inland from the coast and is laid out in grid-fashion with attractive suburbs surrounding the City Centre. Hastings has a Mediterranean-style climate with long, hot summers and mild winters.

The City is dubbed the fruit bowl of New Zealand because of the abundance of fruits and vegetables that are grown on its deep alluvial soils. Hastings is also famous for wine grapes and the area boasts a number of vineyards that produce premium wines. Hastings and Napier have some of the finest Spanish Mission and Art Deco styled buildings in the world. They were built following the great Napier earthquake of 1931. Hastings has exceptional Primary and Secondary schools, some with long traditions.

Hastings has lots of attractions, including numerous parks, the Hawke’s Bay Exhibition Centre with displays of arts and crafts, and Splash Planet water theme park. Marvellous beaches and an abundance of fishing and diving locations are just a short drive from the City Centre and there is great trout fishing to be had in inland rivers and waterways.

Claremont Motorlodge Review
Hastings, New Zealand

1 / 5 Star Rating
My daughter and I stayed at the Claremont Hastings earlier this year. Having stayed there many times previous. When I made the booking I asked for a room I knew, and was told it was arrival. On arriving I was given the key to another room which wasn't up to the same standard. I was told to "take it or leave". So I choose to leave only to be rung and told if I didn't come back my credit card would be charged. I did stay, but was made very unwelcome. I will not return, and due to family living in the area, I am a frequent vistor to Hastings. My extended family also has now moved their bookings to another motel.
