About Palmerston North New Zealand

Palmerston North is the commercial centre of Manawatu Province. It is the sixth largest city in New Zealand with a population of over 76,000.

Palmerston North is an attractive, tree-lined city built around The Square with gardens, fountains and shops to suit all tastes. The Civic Centre, Manawatu Art Gallery, the Science Centre and Manawatu Museum are all located in and around The Square. Palmerston North is also known as the Knowledge City.

Every year, Massey University, Polytechnics, the International Pacific College and allied Teaching Centres enrol over 20,000 students. The city is also home to several research institutions including Crown Research Institutes. For younger students, Palmerston North is well served by excellent primary and secondary schools, many with long and famous histories. The city offers a host of activities centred around a busy bar, café and restaurant scene.

Palmerston North has the most eating-out places for its population in New Zealand. Other features include tenpin bowling, indoor karting, the Esplanade and Rose Gardens that are next door to a heated Lido Swimming Complex, the NZ Rugby Museum, river and bush walks and trout fishing in the Manawatu River.

The Manawatu Province that surrounds Palmerston North has more than 27,500 people. The Province is a rich agricultural area with predominantly sheep, beef, dairying and deer farming. Palmerston North is centrally located in the lower North Island and is a major transport hub two hours north of Wellington and three hours south of Napier.
