About Taupo New Zealand
Taupo (population 22,000) is a resort town at the north-east end of Lake Taupo, in the centre of the North Island. Taupo is also the commercial centre for whole of the Lake Taupo basin (population of over 10,000).
Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand and is a little bigger than the area of Singapore. Taupo offers a central location, only a few hours drive from any of the major North Island cities. The commercial district has a variety of retail shopping, ample free parking without traffic jams, cafes, restaurants, a modern library and cultural facilities.
Lake Taupo and its tributary streams and rivers are world famous for the number and quality of their rainbow and brown trout. Lake Taupo is also the focus for adventure and water sports including jet boating, white water rafting, bungy jumping, parasailing and skydiving. Wairakei Park on the banks of the Waikato River, just north of the town, has lots of visitor attractions. Nearby are geothermal and volcanic areas and the awesome Huka Falls are just downstream.
