About Wellington New Zealand

Wellington, at the bottom of the North Island, is the Capital City of New Zealand. Wellington has the Beehive, Parliament Buildings, and many associated Corporate and Government offices. Wellington is also home to numerous Embassies and Consulates, both in the central city and in nearby suburbs.

Wellington is a vibrant and energetic city with close packed high-rise office buildings and apartments in the Central Business District. Extending just two kilometres in diameter, and bordered by Wellington harbour, Wellington is a truly walking city. Wellington offers city vistas and stunning scenery that extends from beach and harbour views to the distant Rimutuka Mountain Range. Wellington is famous for its cafes, restaurants and nightlife. The city hosts the Festivals of the Arts and the World of Wearable Art and local and international stage and theatre productions at the Michael Fowler Centre, the Town Hall, the restored Embassy Theatre and the Te Papa National Museum.

Wellington also has a world-wide following for the filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and for King Kong. Weta Workshops are regular Oscar winners and lots of film fans visit Wellington to see some of the locations used during filming.

Wellington is the northern terminus for the Interislander Ferries, car and train ferries that travel to Picton at the top of the South Island. The ferries are the preferred transport option by tourists travelling in campervans, New Zealand families, backpackers and budget travellers. Many tourists stay over in Wellington to see the sights, ride the cable car, go to the zoo and explore the shopping.

The Wellington Region comprising Wellington plus its satellite cities of Porirua, Hutt City and Upper Hutt City has over 425,000 people. The region is serviced by Wellington International Airport, a busy container port, and road and rail links to the rest of the North Island.
