About Whakatane New Zealand
Whakatane has something for everyone. The locals call Whakatane the ‘Big Little Town’ - not quite a city by official standards but big in attitude. Whakatane has one of New Zealand's warmest climates with mild winters and long hot summers and the town has excellent shopping facilities with good restaurants and colourful cafes. Whakatane is on the Pacific Coast Highway, a popular tourist route from Auckland.
Whakatane is only an hour's drive from Rotorua and Tauranga. Charter and cruise boats leave daily from Whakatane Harbour for recreational fishing, diving, game fishing and swimming with dolphins. Whakatane is the closest departure point for White Island, an offshore volcano with spasmodic eruptions and sulphurous gases.
Heli-tours are the most popular way to visit the White Island volcano. Other adventure activities available from Whakatane include rock climbing, tramping, mountain biking and sea kayaking.
