About Greymouth New Zealand Greymouth is the major town on the West Coast of the South Island. Greymouth, at the mouth of the Grey River, was one of the first towns established on the West Coast and today is the main administrative and commercial centre for the whole region. Greymouth has a population of about 10,000 people and is the base for both tourism and regional industries. This area of the West Coast is famous for coal mining at nearby Runanga and Dobson, gold mining in local river beds, and native and plantation forestry in the hills. Other industries include farming on the flatter land, farm product and timber processing, and food and beverage manufacture. Greymouth offers a great range of small specialty and tourist shops, all of the main national chain stores, numerous and hospitable hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars. There is a local Art Gallery and a History House. Popular outdoor pursuits include trout fishing, hunting for pig and deer, seal and dolphin watching, white water rafting, walking and tramping. The Greymouth region is steeped in history, going back to early gold-rush days. Today, many artists and creative people live and work in the area. Greymouth is the terminus for the famous Tranz Alpine tourist train from Christchurch. The town is also a busy centre for coaches and shuttles taking visitors and backpackers on tours to other destinations up and down the West Coast. |
