About Hokitika New Zealand

Hokitika is located on the West Coast of the South Island. The town enjoys wonderful views of the Tasman Sea, Mount Cook and the Southern Alps. Hokitika is famous for its annual Wildfoods Festival.

Hokitika is the gateway to the South Westland World Heritage National Park. The Arahura River, which enters the sea 8 kilometres north of Hokitika, is a traditional source of pounamu (greenstone or jade). Several shops in Hokitika sell expertly crafted greenstone jewellery and sculptures. South Westland is popular with other craftspeople, including gold jewellers, wood turners and potters.

Other local industries include commercial gold mining, tourist attractions like Shantytown, farming, sphagnum moss collecting, and fishing. South of Hokitika are Lake Kaniere, a placid lake and a great place for boating, water skiing, picnics and swimming and Lake Mahinapua, ideal for sailing and camping. Further south are the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers.
