About Timaru New Zealand
Timaru, at the southern end of the Canterbury Plains, is the commercial centre for South Canterbury. Timaru has a population of over 43,000 and overlooks the sea and beautiful Caroline Bay. Timaru city also looks across plains and gentle hills towards the Southern Alps. Timaru is about halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin.
The principal industry is farming and the area produces a range of animal, forestry and crop products. Much of this local production is exported through the Port of Timaru. The city centre has numerous Victorian and Edwardian buildings and several historic churches. Tourist ventures include scenic walks, live theatre, factory tours, bird watching, sea and fresh water fishing, good restaurants and cafes, and a wide selection of accommodation places.
Timaru is famous for its South Canterbury Museum, the Botanic Gardens, the Timaru Festival of Roses and the Christmas Carnival at Caroline Bay. Aigantighe Art historic home and sculpture gardens has the third largest public art collection in the South Island.
