About Singapore Singapore

Singapore has a population of approximately 4 million people made up of 75% Chinese, 15% Malays, 7% Indians and remaining being rest mixed races of Americans, Europeans and others.

The temperature is a minimum of 24 degrees and a maximum of 32 degrees throughout the year. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Singapore was 20.5 C (69 F). The daily average relative humidity is 84.4 per cent. The humidity can get past 90 per cent just before dawn and average 60 to 70 per cent in dry afternoons. Singapore has extensive air conditioning in their buildings and transportation that makes the humidity easier to live with. It can take the you a week to get aclimatised to this humidity if you are not used to it. The rainy season falls during the Northeast Monsoon from December to January. December is usually the wettest month while February is the sunniest. July and August are the hottest months, with average temperatures hitting their peaks. Annual rainfall is 2,333 mm and during the day it is not unusual to have torrential rain that lasts only 5 minutes. Its recommended you carry an umbrella to avoid getting wet in these unexpected showers.

Singapore is unique in that it has transformed itself from a third World country in 1965 when it separated from Malaysia to a hassle free, no-red-tape First World economy by today’s standards. Singapore recognises the official languages of English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. English is their first language and business in Singapore is conducted in either English or Mandarin.

The ethnic diversity of Singapore and its location in Asia provides a melting pot of different cuisines from around the world. To get a taste of the varied Signapore Cusien it is recommend that you dine at one of hawker centres. There are many hawker centres, but Newton Food Centre is one of the most popular. It’s best to visit Newton Food Centre in the evening after 7 pm because more food vendors are open. The variety is immense at hawker centers. You may get pested by vendors to buy food from them but don’t be pushed around and make your own mind up after seeing all the food vendor options.

Singapore is famous for being one of the cleanest cities in the world. They achieved this by taking getting tough with litter offenders. If you are caught littering and are a first time offender you can expect a fine of up to S$1,000. The importation, sale and possession of chewing gum is also banned. Make sure you leave your gum at home when traveling to Singapore. Smoking is banned in public places and offenders face a maximum fine of S$1,000. If you thought that was a bit tough then check out the Singapore drug laws. The death penalty is mandatory for those convicted of trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting more than 15g of heroin, 30g of morphine, 30g of cocaine, 500g of cannabis, 200g of cannabis resin and 1.2kg of opium. Its not surprising that Singapore has a low crime rate and generally it is a safer that most places. However don’t become too over-confident with your personal safety in Singapore. You only have to talk to my travel companion who was mugged for his wallet at night to realize that you still have to be careful after having consumed one too many drinks.

The local Singapore currency is the Singapore dollar. One dollar is divided into 100 cents. Do not be concerned if you receive change in the form of the Brunei dollar because the Brunei dollar is accepted at par in both Brunei and Singapore under a currency agreement.

The Singapore public transport system of busses and trains are very frequent, cheap, efficient and on time. The MRT Stations and MRT trains are air-conditioned which is relief given Singapore high humidity. The cheap Singapore taxi fares make the option of a taxi airport transfer after a long flight a much more sensible idea than having to deal with the MRT system on arrival.

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore Review
Singapore, Singapore

2 / 5 Star Rating
Rooms average, small bathroom, rooms have wooden floors and others have carpet. Horrible toilet roll holders and toilet paper. Rooms cleanliness average. My bed sheets smelled terrible but looked clean, had to change rooms because sheets smelt to bad to sleep in. Safes in room. Rooms had bathropbes and slippers which was great. Hotel has a gym. Staff at hotel very nice and helpful. Located a long way from center of Singapore but close to Ikea.
