About Phoenix United States

Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona, the state capital of Arizona, and the hub of the rapidly growing American Southwest. Greater Phoenix comprises 22 freeway-laced cities sprawling over more than 9,000 square miles and hosting some 3.3 million residents.

The Valley of the Sun, as Greater Phoenix is also known, is one of the fastest growing metroplexes in the United States. Phoenix is located in the heart of the arid Sonoran Desert and temperatures reach, or exceed, 100 °F (38 °C) on an average of 89 days during the year.

Phoenix is unique amongst large American cities, in that the downtown area has only a few mid-rise and high-rise buildings and only two skyscrapers over 400 feet tall (122 meters). Cultural attractions in downtown Phoenix include the Arizona Science Center and the Phoenix Art Museum. Winters in Phoenix are mild with sunny weather and while snow is extremely rare in the area, it can occur from time to time. Due to the warm climate in winter, Phoenix benefits greatly from seasonal tourism and recreation, and has a particularly vibrant golf industry. As the state capital of Arizona, many residents in Phoenix are employed by the Government, and by Arizona State University.

The United States military has a significant presence in Phoenix with Luke Air Force Base located in the western suburbs. The Desert Botanical Garden in central Phoenix has nearly 20,000 specimens of the prickly plants that thrive in dry climates, especially those from the Sonoran desert.

Phoenix offers the outdoor enthusiast endless options ranging from world class golf and tennis to four-wheeling in the desert, hiking and hot-air ballooning. Phoenix is home to world class shopping and a cosmopolitan nightlife with performing arts, gourmet dining and art galleries galore.
