About Denver United States

Denver is located on the plains just east of the Rocky Mountains and is the capital and largest city in Colorado. Denver is nicknamed "The Mile-High City" because its official elevation is one statute mile (5,280 feet or 1,609 meters) above sea level.

Denver has a semi-arid climate characterised by dry winters and little snow, wetter springs, low-humidity summers, and pleasant autumns. Because Denver is the largest city within 600 miles, the local economy is built around transportation and the storage and distribution of goods and services to the adjacent Mountain States. Denver is also approximately halfway between the large cities of the Midwest and the cities of the West Coast, making Denver a key trade point for America.

Many federal agencies are based in, or have offices in, the Denver area. Denver hosts many companies working on US defence and space projects.

Denver International Airport, the eleventh busiest airport in the world, handled 43.4 million passengers in 2005. For the sports lover, Denver is widely recognised as being one of the leading sports towns in America and the Denver Broncos are a famous NFL team. The nearby Rocky Mountains offer Denver residents a year-round recreational mecca where it can snow almost anytime, but sunny days create quick meltdowns.

The cheeseburger was invented in Denver by Louis Ballast, who operated the Humpty Dumpty Barrel drive-in, and was patented by him in 1935.
