Honolulu and Juneau, Alaska are the only US State Capitals that cannot be reached directly by road from the contiguous 48 States. Average temperatures in Honolulu differ very little from winter to summer because the tropical climate throughout the Hawaiian Islands is moderated by their mid-ocean location and some cooling by ocean currents. The Capitol District is the eastern part of Downtown Honolulu, incorporating the Hawaii State Capitol, Iiolani Palace, Honolulu Hale (City Hall), State Library, the statue of King Kamehameha I and numerous government buildings. Downtown Honolulu is the financial, commercial, and governmental centre of Hawaii and the First Hawaiian Center is the tallest building (134 metres tall). Honolulu is a great place to visit any time of year but the busiest tourist season is during winter (December to February) with many visitors being snowbirds escaping cold Northern Hemisphere winters. Waikiki is the world famous tourist district of Honolulu with hotels, shops, and nightlife and the Ala Moana Center is the world's largest open-air shopping centre. Established in 1900, the Honolulu Symphony is the oldest US symphony orchestra west of the Rocky Mountains.
