About Chicago United States

Chicago, known as the "Windy City," is the third most populous city in the United States, following New York City and Los Angeles. Chicago is located in the mid-western State of Illinois along the south-western shore of Lake Michigan. Chicago is home to nearly three million people who bring their individual and multicultural heritage to the city. The greater metropolitan area surrounding Chicago has over 10 million people.

Chicago is the birthplace of the modern building and was the site of the worlds first skyscraper. Today, Chicago is the architectural, financial, and cultural capital of the midwest and leads the country in the number of Conventions hosted annually. Chicago is the transportation centre of the United States with more rail lines, airflights, and interstates radiating from the city than any other city in the country. The midwest is a place of climate extremes and winters in Chicago can often be bitterly cold, and extreme summer heat waves are not uncommon.

Chicago is the second financial centre in the United States with the second largest central business district and third largest gross metropolitan product. Modern-day futures and commodity trading markets were pioneered in Chicago, resulting in the establishment of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Chicago is home to two leading American universities, the University of Chicago in Hyde Park and Northwestern University in nearby Evanston. In 1998, the City of Chicago opened the Museum Campus, a lakefront park surrounding three important museums, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium.

Chicago is a well-known theatre capital and the birthplace of improvisational comedy, where it remains extremely popular. The internationally acclaimed Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest and most respected orchestras in the United States. The Chicago Cultural Center, an architectural showplace for the lively and visual arts, is a great place to begin a visit to Chicago. Chicago deep-dish pizza is world renowned and popular locally, although thin-crust and other styles of pizza are also popular throughout the city. A traditional Chicago hotdog is typically loaded with mustard, chopped onion, sliced tomato, pickle relish, celery salt, peppers and a dill pickle. Chicago also has a long list of world-renowned dining establishments serving a wide array of cuisine from some of the most well-known chefs in the United States.

Chicago is proud of its world-championship Major League Baseball teams (Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs), its NFL football team (Chicago Bears), and its two professional basketball teams (Chicago Bulls and the WNBA Chicago Sky). Chicago has thousands of restaurants serving a medley of culinary delights to suit every taste, every budget and every mood. Hundreds of specialty shops and boutiques are to be found along Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street, presenting top-of-the-line goods from around the world.
