Detroit is the oldest city in the Midwest and is located on the north bank of the Detroit River between Lake Erie and Lake St.Clair in southeastern Michigan. Detroit has a temperate seasonal climate, which is influenced by the Great Lakes and with warm humid summers and cold winters with moderate snowfall. The advent of the Industrial Revolution and the assembly line made Detroit the automobile capital of America.
The Big Three auto companies - General Motors, the Ford Motor Company and DaimlerChrysler are based in Detroit and the surrounding region. Revitalized and reinvigorated after decades of neglect, Detroit is reclaiming its place as a cultural and tourist capital.
Detroit is a fun city, full of music of all kinds and the birthplace of the Motown sound. Detroit has some excellent restaurants, particularly when it comes to ethnic Greek, Mexican and soul food spots and high-end menus. Detroit is a national centre of African American culture. Monroe Street is the centre of ethnic Detroit dominated by Greek restaurants and businesses.
The city of Detroit has several universities and colleges including Wayne State University with its internationally renowned medical and law schools. Detroit has the second-largest theatre district in America, after New York City, with eighteen professional theatres. Detroit is more recently home to many hip-hop artists.
The North American International Auto Show (January) and the Woodward Dream Cruise (August) are two major events in Detroit that are associated with the automobile industry. The Detroit Institute of Arts has one of the best art collections in the United States and showcases over 65,000 works with everything from mummies to modern art.
