The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the surrounding area is the most highly populated area in Minnesota. It is said that Mark Twain was the first to call Minneapolis and St Paul the Twin Cities owing to their proximity along the Mississippi River.
Minneapolis is the largest city in the state and St. Paul is the second largest and also the capital of Minnesota. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis St. Paul are pure heartland USA - industrious, prosperous, and heavily into sports, shopping and the great outdoors. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis St. Paul experience a relatively harsh climate due to their northerly latitude and inland location, with monthly average daily high temperatures ranging from 21.9° F in January to 83.3° in July.
Minneapolis and St. Paul offer a wealth of attractions including the Science Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, the American Swedish Institute, and the Ard Godfrey House. Minneapolis is known for its orchestra, art museums, and the sculpture garden with the cherry spoon near Loring Park and the Walker Art Center. Galtier Plaza in downtown St. Paul has shops, a food court, offices, restaurants, condominiums, movie theatres, and a YMCA.
The Mall of America, located in the Minneapolis St. Paul suburb of Bloomington was the largest shopping mall in total area in the United States when it opened in 1992. Minneapolis St. Paul is considered to be the capital for the arts in the Upper Midwest with more theatre seats per capita than in any other American city and a very high per-capita attendance of events. Ice fishing is a major pastime in the winter for residents of Minneapolis St. Paul along with hunting, riding snowmobiles, ATV riding and numerous other outdoor activities.
