About Las Vegas United States

Las Vegas in the state of Nevada is a world-famous vacation, shopping, entertainment and gambling destination. Las Vegas in many ways epitomises American excess with giant mega-casino hotels that are decorated with lavish care and attention to create a fantasy-like atmosphere.

With a nick-name like Sin City and a 24 hour party scene that includes non-stop gaming, ultra-hip nightclubs, and sexy shows, Las Vegas is the perfect place to indulge your fantasies. The city of Las Vegas is located in an arid, dusty, and rocky desert basin surrounded by mountains. The climate in Las Vegas is typical of the Mojave Desert with hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine year-round, and very little rainfall. Nearly 1.6 million people live in the Las Vegas valley, but only 575,00 live inside Las Vegas city limits.

Tourism, gaming, and conventions are the primary drivers of the Las Vegas economy, supported by the retail and dining industries. The Las Vegas Strip is a 6.7 km section of Las Vegas Boulevard South that has many of the largest hotels, casinos and resorts in the world. Las Vegas is marketed as The Entertainment Capital of the World with legalised gambling, easy access to alcoholic beverages, and various degrees of adult entertainment. The first hotel and casino to open in Las Vegas was the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in 1906 and topless showgirls made their debut at the Dunes in 1957.

In 2004, more than 37 million people visited Las Vegas and more than 22,000 conventions were held. The glamorous image portrayed by Las Vegas has made it a popular setting for films and television programmes. Almost all stores and restaurants in Las Vegas are open 24 hours a day. Weddings in Las Vegas are famous for their low cost, speed and convenience and over 120,000 weddings are performed every year.

Red Rock Canyon is located on the western edge of the Las Vegas city limits and offers some of the best rock climbing in America. Las Vegas is a golfing mecca with dozens of championship golf courses. The Grand Canyon National Park is about 4 hours by car from Las Vegas and Death Valley National Park is two hours to the west by car.
