About Philadelphia United States

Philadelphia is the fifth most populous city in the United States and the largest in population and area in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia metropolitan area is the fourth largest in the U.S with about 5.7 million people.

Philadelphia is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the U.S and in the 18th century, it eclipsed Boston and New York City in political and social importance. Philadelphia was a major centre of the independence movement during the American Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were drafted in Philadelphia and signed in the city Independence Hall. Philadelphia served as the first capital city of the United States, before the construction of Washington, D.C.

The climate in Philadelphia is temperate with hot and humid summers, mild autumns and springs, and cold winters and variable snowstorms. Philadelphias economy is heavily based upon manufacturing, refining, food, and financial services. The city has the second largest Irish, Italian, and Jamaicans populations in America but recent immigrants to Philadelphia have come from Asia, Central Europe and the Middle East. Ben Franklin is probably the most famous person to have lived and worked in Philadelphia.

Besides its hallowed historical sights, Philadelphia also revels in culture and the arts, with a renowned orchestra, world-class museums and fine restaurants. Philadelphia is also one of the largest college towns in the United States with over 120,000 students studying within the city limits alone and nearly 300,000 total college and university students in the metropolitan area. Philadelphia has over 100 multi-ethnic neighbourhoods giving the city a vibrant atmosphere with festivals, music and foods such as cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and hoagies (sandwiches). The city of Philadelphia is a vibrant centre for arts and culture with live theatre, museum exhibitions, art galleries and historical tours.
