About Dallas United States
Dallas is the third-most populous city in the state of Texas with a population of over 1.2 million. Dallas is the main cultural and economic centre of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area with a combined population of over 5.7 million people.
Dallas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, dry, winds from the north and west in the summer and an average annual snowfall of 2.5 inches in winter. Dallas lies near the southern end of Tornado Alley, which runs through the prairie lands of the Midwest, and severe storms can be generated over Dallas with spectacular lightning, rain, hail and sometimes tornadoes.
In 1930, oil was discovered 160 km east of Dallas and the city quickly became the financial centre for the oil industry in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1958, the integrated circuit was invented in Dallas by Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments, and computer and telecom industries now make up a significant component of the Dallas economy.
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is the largest airport in Texas, the second largest in the United States, and third largest in the world. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is home base to American Airlines, the largest airline in the world.
It is said that Dallasites consider themselves more sophisticated than those in other parts of Texas, including nearby Fort Worth. The slogan "Live Large Think Big" describes the essence and vitality of Dallas and a city built on big dreams, freshly blazed trails and an attitude that all things are possible.
The Arts District in downtown Dallas is becoming a major focus for the city with the Winspear Opera House, Wyly Theatre, Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Meyerson Symphony Center. Dallas is a richly diverse city offering a thriving culinary scene, countless luxury accommodations, professional sports, trendy entertainment districts and endless shopping opportunities. Dallasites are very fond of their Dallas Cowboys, frequent Super Bowl champions.
