Houston city covers more than 1,600 square km and has a total population of more than 2 million people. Houston is world-renowned for its energy, particularly oil, and for aeronautics industries and for its ship channel. The Houston metropolitan area comprises the largest petrochemical manufacturing area in the world, including synthetic rubber, insecticides, and fertilisers. The Port of Houston is the sixth-largest port in the world and the area is also the worlds leading centre for the building of oilfield equipment. Internationally-renowned Texas Medical Center, which contains the worlds largest concentration of research and health-care institutions, is based at Houston. Officially, Houston is nicknamed the Space City as it is home to NASA and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, where Mission Control Center is located. Space Center Houston includes many interactive exhibits, including moon rocks and a shuttle simulator, in addition to special presentations that tell the story of the NASA manned space flight program. Houston is very flat and much of the city stands only about 15 metres above sea level, making flooding a recurring problem for its residents. The summer climate in Houston is humid subtropical while the winters are cool and temperate with few, if any, snow days. The largest and most popular event held in Houston is the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo that is held over twenty days from late February to early March. Houston has a large immigrant population with two Chinatowns as well as the third-largest Vietnamese American population in the United States. About 90 languages are frequently spoken in the Houston area. The Theatre District in Houston is ranked second in the country to New York City in the number of theatre seats for live performances and movies. Houston has permanent professional resident companies in all of the major performing arts disciplines including the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Ballet, and The Alley Theatre. Houston is a prime stop for touring companies from Broadway, concerts, shows, and exhibitions for a variety of interests, ranging from the quilting show to auto, boat, home and gun shows. Houston is served by the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, the William P. Hobby Airport, and is the headquarters of Continental Airlines. The city is served by the University of Houston System with four separate universities, two multi-institution Teaching Centres, more than 40 Research Centres and institutes, and the prestigious Rice University. Houston is home to several famous professional sporting teams for hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer and football, all of whom play in new state-of-the-art stadiums. |
