About Salt Lake City United States

Salt Lake City is the State Capital and most populated city in Utah and residents are known as Salt Lakers. Salt Lake City occupies the north end of the Salt Lake Valley and is surrounded by mountains that rise dramatically to an elevation of 11,752 feet (3,582 m).

Founded in 1847 by a group of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) led by Brigham Young, Salt Lake City is today the location of the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Great Salt Lake, located 10 miles (12 km) north of Salt Lake City is the largest remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville and the famous Bonneville Salt Flats west of the city are also part of the ancient lake. The climate for Salt Lake City is separated into four very distinct seasons with hot dry summers and cold snowstorms during the winter accompanied by temperature inversions producing fog, haze and air pollution.

The modern economy of Salt Lake City is service oriented based around government, trade, transportation, utilities, and professional and business services. The downtown area of Salt Lake City is made up of a collection of old and new structures, with several twenty-plus-story steel and glass towers adjacent to late 19th-century brick and mortar. The tallest building in Salt Lake City is the Wells Fargo Center, at 24 stories and 422 feet (128 m), although the LSD Church Office Building has 28 stories and actually appears higher as it stands on slightly higher ground.

Top tourist attractions include the Salt Lake Temple, the historic Tabernacle, and the LDS Conference Center which seats about 20,000 people. The LDS Genealogical Library just west of Temple Square is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Utah, along with Zion National Park. Another popular attraction is the architecturally unique Salt Lake City Public Library.
