Abergavenny Castle
Enough remains of this castle to show that it must have been impressive indeed, with very high walls which the 16th-century historian Leland said were "likely not to fall."
Skenfrith Castle
6 miles north west of Monmouth, Skenfrith was the smallest of 3 castles built in this area by the Normans, to guard the borders against Welsh raids. A rectangular castle, with a drum tower at each corner, and a circular keep inside.
