North west of the hotel is the remains of Pen-y-crug, an Iron Age hill fort. It may well have been occupied when the Romans arrived. Brecon Cathedral Bernard of Neufmarche built a castle at Brecon to control the area and gave an existing church near the castle to a monk from Battle Abbey in Sussex called Roger.
